Casement Window Types
A casement is hinged at the side and the whole sash swings outward. What changes from one type to the next is how you open it and how many sashes share the frame.

Crank-out casement windows
The classic casement opens with a handle that works as a crank, which is why the style is also called a crank window. This Old House's magazine says the full-height opening gives maximum ventilation, though the sash can be damaged if it's left open in the rain.
- Installed, impact (This Old House): $450 to $575.
- Installed, non-impact: $400 to $3,000 (HomeGuide), $400 to $1,200 (Fixr).

Push-out casement windows
A push-out casement drops the crank: you turn the handle at the sash and push the window open. Fixr describes the handle as tucked between the sash and the frame. This Old House describes the casement sash as swinging out "with a push or a hand crank". Ask whether the push-out sash has a stay that holds it in a breeze.

Center-opening casement pairs
Two casements in one frame can open from the middle, with the crank placed at the center much like a French door. One manufacturer's French inswing version drops the vertical center post for an open view. Where two units are joined with a mullion instead, that mullion has its own test rules, covered below.

Why Pompano Beach homeowners call Pompano Windows
- One independent installer calls back, not a list of five
- The request costs you nothing
- Ask for approval numbers and design pressures on the quote
- Permit, removal and stucco patching priced in writing
Casement Costs and What Moves Them
Casements cost more than the simplest styles. Fixr groups them with double-hungs as windows with a more complex opening system, against cheaper picture and single-hung units. This Old House says casements seal tightly, which helps energy efficiency, but the extra hardware raises the price.
Impact versus plain
This Old House's $450 to $575 impact range sits near the bottom of HomeGuide's $400 to $3,000 non-impact spread. The guides don't price the same sizes, so compare quotes on the same unit.Size
This Old House's size chart for hurricane windows runs from $200 to $400 at 26 x 38 inches to $485 to $975 at 37 x 63 inches.Labor
HomeGuide puts impact-window labor at $100 to $400 a window.
Casements in Broward Openings
Approval and label
Each casement needs an approved, labeled HVHZ unit or an opening behind hurricane shutters.Mulled pairs
Florida code says mullions and mulled assemblies are tested to TAS 202 in the HVHZ, or engineered to accepted practice such as AAMA 450. A mullion tested in a lab has to resist 1.5 times the design pressure of the windows it carries.Bedrooms
A casement in a sleeping room still has to meet the egress sizes; check the clear-opening figure on the quote.Hardware near salt air
This Old House notes that coastal salt and moisture can speed up wear. Ask what upkeep the crank, hinges and stays need.Permit
Pompano Beach needs a city permit for each window replacement job.
What a Casement Quote Should List
Each unit's approval
Approval number, positive and negative design pressure and size for every sash or pair.Glass
Impact glass is laminated. Bob Vila says the interlayer is EVA or PVB, and PVB is the budget option.Lifespan
HomeGuide says impact windows last 10 to 40 years depending on material and glass, so ask what the frame and hardware are rated for.Heat gain
Each unit has to meet the 0.25 SHGC limit.Deposit
On more than 10% up front, ask about the deposit rule.
